Dear Reader
Last year, in what feels like a completely other time and space, when Uncut Gems was released in late December, I went to a pop-up experience in Midtown New York that recreated the jewelry store Adam Sandler’s character Howie owned in the movie. It was right in the heart of the Diamond District, and it’s funny now how I didn’t give two thoughts to how many people I had to jostle past to get to the pop-up. One of the items inside the store was this diamond-encrusted Furby, one of the film’s most memorable and most talked-about pieces. But it wasn’t available to buy just yet…
Well, now film company A24 is putting that Furby and a bunch of other props from its best films up for auction, in aid of Covid-19 relief. Today, the dress from Midsomar goes under the digital hammer, with Furby coming next month. Kudos to A24 on a superb idea!
In other superb news, here is today’s list of entertainment options for your delight:
1. From now until the end of May, the New York City Ballet is also going virtual, with a slate of performances and movement classes. These coincide with the dates of their now-cancelled Spring 2020 performances at Lincoln Center. Tuesday and Thursdays, with the exact dates and details are here.
2. This tip comes from my friends over at The Queer Review. Michelle Visage and Tyler Oakley will host a fabulous livestream concert, dubbed The Stonewall Inn Gives Back, to raise funds for LGBTQ nightlife workers in need. It’ll feature appearances from the likes of Alan Cumming, Cyndi Lauper,, MUNA, Todrick Hall and Troye Sivan. 5pm PST / 8pm EST.
3. The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess has been hosting Twitter Listening Parties. He usually goes through 3/4 albums a day, and today’s lineup is a not-to-be-missed one. Tim will be talking about Oasis’ third album, Be Here Now, which is sure to spark a lot of thoughts.
4. Pink Floyd is following on from other big names (like Radiohead, which is airing its 2009 Buenos Aires concert today) and providing a weekly livestream of rare and previously unseen concert footage. They’ll be sharing full concerts every Friday at 9 am PST/12 pm EST on their YouTube channel, starting with tomorrow’s 1995 concert film from London’s Earls Court. Today though, you can catch David Gilmour and Polly Samson perform a “Von Trapped Family Livestream” on Facebook.
5. The National Theatre’s production of Twelfth Night, Shakespeare's whirlwind comedy of mistaken identity featuring Tamsin Greig, plays on YouTube from 7pm UK time.
Also, if you’re in New York, be sure to turn on the radio and stick your head out the window for a little group karaoke. The Peace of Heart choir is leading a Lean on Me singalong.
Thank you for reading. Please share if you feel so inclined. It does help spread the joy!
I’ll leave you with Bon Iver’s Please Don’t Live in Fear. A much-needed quiet rally cry if ever we needed one.
Stay safe, stay sane
