Dear Reader
Wonderful news has reached us! Broadway star and friend-of-our-friends Nick Cordero has woken up! After more than a month of being in a medically-induced coma, while fighting Covid-19, his wife Amanda Kloots has shared this update with all who have been playing Nick’s song and praying for his wellbeing.
It’s also Stevie Wonder’s 70th birthday today so hip, hip, hooray on that account! I think we should all sing his Happy Birthday song at the 7pm #clapbecausewecare because I’m sure his music has been getting many people through this time. There is a 24-hour party for his though, so that’s going to be a celebration for sure. Joy truly abounds.
Today’s selection of online entertainment options:
1. The annual BAM Gala is taking place tonight virtually. Honoring actress Cate Blanchett, producer Jeanne Donovan Fisher and author Zadie Smith, the event will feature performances from Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch’s Julie Anne Stanzak, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Hope Boykin and St. Vincent (an exclusive performance only available during the event). There will also be a digital dance floor courtesy of DJ Eli Escobar, as well as the kickoff of their online BAM Art Auction!
2. The half-hour monologue, Sea Wall, originally starring Andrew Scott (before he became Fleabag’s Hot Priest) is streaming on YouTube for a week. Written by Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), the play made its broadway debut last year with Tom Sturridge.
3. One of my favourite indie films from last year, which I got to see at a small screening theatre-cafe in Harlem, is on Netflix, The Burial of Kojo, and the director, Blitz Bazawule (aka rapper Blitz the Ambassador) will tweet along for the Array Matinee Watch Party, 1pm PST/ 4pm EST.
4. Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi will perform a VR concert from his parents' home at 4pm PST / 7pm EST on Oculus Venues. If you don’t have fancy VR equipment, the concert will be simulcast on Lewis Capaldi's Facebook page.
5. If you needed another reason to move your body, Dance Church is it. They have a weekly schedule of streaming classes, taught by dancers and choreographers. Today’s class is with Thomas House 5pm EST / 8pm PST.
Thank you for reading. I’ll leave you with this fantastic online ensemble from the Minnesota Orchestra with Dessa.
